Barcelona: Cultural Excursions
For Sojourners in Barcelona, acquiring cultural sophistication is an engaging activity. Sojourning in Barcelona provides time to frequent the city's museums. Much of the city itself is an open air museum. Many of Spain's greatest artists (Gaudí, Sert, Picasso, Miro, and Dali) have lived and worked there.
Sojourners walk the city from the Barri Gotic, or Gothic Quarter, to the Quadrat d'Or in the Eixample. There one can see the most numerous examples of the Modernist style of architecture, stroll in the Parc Guell, explore Montjuic's fortress, the cathedral and other significant churches, as well as linger in cafes to appreciate the particular character of present day Barcelona. The city's culture has always encouraged artists, architects, musicians, photographers, and writers.
Venturing beyond Barcelona proper on weekends, we explore the Mediterranean coastline, the mountain of Montserrat and Benedictine monastery, the Medieval town of Gerona, Figueres, Dali's birthplace and site of the Dali Museum, the beach town of Sitges, and the Bodegas Torres wine center.
Intermittent weekend excursions include visits to notable cultural destinations— Madrid, Bilbao, and the ancient cities of the south coast. There is so much to explore and discover.
