Letter from the Directors

Night Photograph - Siena

Dear Friends,

Europe — the smallest continent. Just a bit more than half the size of the U.S. But what a disproportionate influence it has had upon the development of the United States. Our language, our political system and, of course, so much of our high culture have come to us from Europe.

For years we have noted that there was no way for college age young people to experience Europe in an age-appropriate peer group without being in a formal "study abroad" program. No way to learn in Europe just, so to speak, by being there. Young people deserve to know this culturally rich territory and to draw deeply from its depths. In a unique way, the Sojourns Abroad programs provide that enriching opportunity.

Today, the 40 some countries of Europe are striving idealistically to form a more perfect union and confront the political realities of a new era. Their common effort echoes our own 200 years ago. Sojourning in Europe reminds young people that the effort must be on-going. It also provides a new lens through which to view their own culture — and themselves.

Finally, by broadening their awareness and deepening their perceptions, the unique Sojourns Abroad programs prepare young people for citizenship in the global community.

We welcome your inquiries,

David Denman
