Sojourns Abroad Is...
- a unique opportunity to live and learn experientially abroad
- a learner-centered, rather than curriculum driven experience
Sojourns Abroad was founded as a way for college age young people to be immersed as part of a mentored, age-appropriate peer group in culturally rich settings without being in a formal, restricting study abroad program.
Instead of being curriculum centered like schools, colleges and other educational programs, Sojourns Abroad is learner centered. In lieu of mandatory courses, assignments, grades and credits, Sojourns Abroad provides a basic structure within which participants assume individualized special projects and pursue serious personal interests. The fact of choice is a significant feature of Sojourns Abroad, and a major requirement is merely to become involved.
An additional defining characteristic of Sojourns Abroad, distinguishing Sojourns Abroad from conventional "study abroad" programs, is the orientation toward global citizenship. Discussions of global issues are frequent and ongoing. This global orientation acknowledges the very real sojourn that participants begin during their authentic experience abroad.
As might be expected, Sojourns Abroad tends to attract bright, curious applicants who are eager to assume some responsibility for their learning.
